OVERVIEW

The Department of Physics at Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology, SMU is focused to upgrade the knowledge of physics for teaching and advanced research. The department has upgraded its laboratory and research facilities by funds of Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India under FIST program. It has a dedicated computer centre with high-end server with internet facility for postgraduate students where they learn programming languages like C/C++/Graphics/ and various software packages like Mathematica, PSPICE, GEANT4. A full time two year MSc (Physics) course approved by UGC was started by the department in 1999. The department is proud to have a team of very experienced and dedicated faculty members with varied specialisations in particle, plasma, condensed matter physics and electronics. Specialisations in above areas are offered to the students as a choice in the second year. The department offers PhD program in all above specialisations and gives the appropriate research environment to young physicists. The department also offers teaching assistantships to deserving candidates based on vacancies to pursue the research in the department.

The Department of Physics at our institute is vibrant with a myriad of student activities that contribute to a holistic academic experience. Engaging students beyond the confines of traditional classrooms, the Physics department fosters a dynamic learning environment. Students actively participate in experimental projects, seminars, and workshops that enhance their understanding of theoretical concepts. The Physics Club, a student-led initiative, organizes regular events like Physics Quiz Nights, where students showcase their knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject in a friendly competition. The club also arranges guest lectures by eminent physicists, providing valuable insights into cutting-edge research and developments in the field. The department encourages students to showcase their creativity through events like Science Expos, where innovative projects and experiments are presented. These activities not only deepen the students' understanding but also nurture their research and presentation skills. Furthermore, the Physics department actively promotes collaboration with other disciplines. Inter-departmental events, such as joint workshops and projects, allow students to apply their physics knowledge in interdisciplinary contexts. The commitment to community service is evident through outreach programs. Physics students engage in educational initiatives, conducting science demonstrations in local schools to inspire younger minds. Overall, the student activities in the Department of Physics not only supplement academic learning but also cultivate a sense of curiosity, teamwork, and social responsibility, preparing students for successful careers in physics and related fields.
